Glenn Arendts obtained specialist qualifications in Emergency Medicine in 1999 and took up his current position as Senior Lecturer in CCREM in 2008.
He has extensive experience in teaching evidence based medicine and clinical emergency medicine to undergraduate students at the Universities of Sydney, NSW and WA. Additionally, he has a long history of teaching research methods to ED trainees, having previously designed and taught modular courses for trainees across Australia. His major research interest resides with acute geriatric care in the ED.
He is a member of both the scientific committee and clinical trial group subcommittee of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and a reviewer for Australian and international emergency medicine journals.
His current projects include:
Emergency care of residential aged care facility (RACF) patients in ED - this multifaceted research includes the largest international epidemiological study of patients presenting to ED via RACF, intervention trials aiming to reduce RACF to ED transfer, and economic analysis of these programs.
Assessment of multidisciplinary care for older adults in ED - this prospective study has enrolled over 1500 patients and assesses the efficacy and cost effectiveness of programs aiming to discharge older patients from ED.
ED Delirium Identification (EDDI) - this multifaceted research includes trials of cognitive assessment tools in the ED and the development of predictive rules for ED delirium identification and intervention.
Heart Failure in the Elderly - several research projects have commenced or are being developed, examining the associations with decompensation in diastolic heart failure and the interaction between diastolic dysfunction and adverse outcome in elderly sepsis patients.
